Bangladesh has increased its food grain production over the past 28 years, from 11.8 million metric tons in 1974 to 26 million metric tons in 2002.
Between 1980 and 1985, food accounted for 59% of total household expenditure. This figure was 57.7% in 2000.
 
14% of the rural population consumed fewer than 1600 kcal per day, with another 10% consuming between 1600 and 1800 kcal per day, and 23% consume between 1800 and 2122 kcal per day (minimum caloric requirement to be food secure)
   
45% of women have low body mass index (less than 18.5)

Women eat last and eat less. They are the most malnourished group in Bangladesh.
   
Fifty percent of all Bangladeshi babies are born underweight.
   
Frequent floods, cyclones and other natural disasters pose special problems for assuring food security.
   
The Government relies increasingly on the private sector to help address food security, a positive trend.
