BRRI Launched BRKB Based Rice Production Training
 
“I had never imagined that an ICT based training course on agriculture will be available for us as the field level professionals of health or engineering use to get in their career”, this was the overwhelmed reaction of one of the participants, Md. Azizur Rahman of DAE, Sharishabari, Jamalpur, in the closing session of the newly launched Knowledge Bank Based Rice Production Training.

The feedback received form the BRRI Authority and other participants was such enthusiastic and encouraging.

Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) training division in collaboration with FoSHoL project of IRRI Bangladesh conducted the four-day Rice Production Training.

The first batch for the coming Boro season to 21 extension workers of FoSHoL implementing NGOs and Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) from November 27 – 30, 2005 at BRRI, Gazipur. The four-day BRKB Based Rice Production Training Module has been developed by the BRRI scientists with support and close collaboration from IRRI Bangladesh to train the GO-NGO extension workers and farmers.
   
This is available simultaneously in a folder as hard copy as well as in the Bangladesh Rice Knowledge Bank ( www.knowledgebank-brri.org ), an electronic depository of agriculture related knowledge accessible through Web and CD-ROM.

This follows the pioneering work done by IRRI Los Banos through IRRI Knowledge Bank. David Shires facilitated the series of preparatory workshops for BRRI scientists on communicating to non-scientific audiences. The unique features of this module are:

The Director General of BRRI Dr. M Mahiul Haque was present in the closing session of the training as the Chief Guest. Director Research of BRRI, Dr. M. A. Baqui and FoSHoL-IRRI Project Manager & IRRI Representative for Bangladesh Dr. Noel P. Magor were present as the Special Guests while Head of Training Division, Dr. Jahirul Islam chaired the session. Among others Director – Administration, Dr. Nazira Quraishi Kamal; CSO of Adaptive Research Division, Dr. Musherraf Husain; Ahmad Salahuddin, Manager – Coordination & Capacity Building and Mamunul Haque, Asst. Manager – Communications were also present. The Chief Guest distributed certificates to the participants of the training.

The training of the 2 nd batch is expected to be organized soon in the Northwest region of the country.

 
FoSHoL is a 56-month project that has been working for the improvement of food security and livelihoods of agriculture dependent resource-poor households mainly small and marginal farmers. This project is coordinated by International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), disseminated by 3 international NGOs and funded by the European Commission (EC).
