A team of 6 members of FoSHoL-CARE which include both staff of sub-contractor (UDP) and FoSHoL-CARE went to an exposure visit to Bangalore, India from February 18-24, 2007. The host organization of this exposure visit was South Asia Rural Reconstruction Association (SARRA). Mrs. Rohini Reddy the Executive Director of SARRA arranged exposure visit for the team to different project/organic farm sites implemented by other NGOs/Individual that enhance visiting FoSHoL-CARE team's knowledge on following areas:
1. Community capacity building
2. Self helps group/federation
3. Women empowerment
4. Land tenure system
5. Indigenous resource system
6. Self managed credit system
The key learning is as follows:
- Project that brings real benefit for the participants and sustain in the long run is simple practical, economical, replicable and well accepted by the targeted people.
- We can tell the difference of organic and inorganic crops by the texture of soil, life cycle of fruit tree, smell of crops, taste of fruits, vegetables and crops. Leaves of crops or trees grow in organic farming is coarse, fruits, vegetables or cereals whatever it does produce tastes good, smells good. Organic farming increase life cycle of fruit tree, loose soil texture. In contrast, leaves of crops, vegetables fruits grown in inorganic farming are comparatively thin, less fragrant and texture of soil turns comparatively solid that hinders healthy circulation of air and sunlight. Moreover, organic farming attracts more birds and insects results in less harmful pests and helps in bird and insect aided pollination.
- Monoceous papaya is more profitable than diasious
- Water supply through drip method is useful for drier and hard soil which reduces the wastage of water and helpful for crop production
- Multi cropping is more beneficial than mono cropping as it reduce the risk factors.
- The indigenous technologies are always environment friendly
- Respect for nature is the main essence of organic farming
- Big tree is useful to protect crops from damage caused by strong wind
- Vermin-compost is good for perennial crops
- We need only 100 kg neem oil cake for per 100 decimals of land to turn inorganic farming system into organic farming system.
- Participatory approach in development can bring change in attitude and value system which will help people to build a society of love , peace and justice
- As a development worker we believe that poor people are powerful, useful and resourceful
- Group members participate in systematic documentation process enhance group cohesion and unity.
- Group members through mutual accountability and transparency make sure that loans are used in the activity that they mention while taking loan by each group member.
- Strong monitoring system makes the group members to aware about the group information.
- Group members solve number of social issues through their collective efforts
