Good Seed Initiative (GSI) workshop held at Bogra |
| Rural Development Academy (RDA), Bogra in collaboration with TMSS and AAS organized a two-day workshop on Good Seed Initiative (GSI) in South Asia on January 23 & 24, 2006 at RDA, Bogra. CABI Bioscience, UK provides funding while IRRI Bangladesh provides technical support for the project. Participants from RDA, TMSS, AAS, HKI, WAVE, AIS, BTV, IRRI Bangladesh, FoSHoL-ActionAid Bangladesh , CABI Bioscience UK , BARI , BRRI, BIRD and farmers were present in this workshop.

Under the project a number of videos on seed production and processing are being produced and shown to large number of resource poor men and women farmers in different parts of the country. Videos are being further validated on the basis of feed back coming from the field. These videos have great potential to be used by the FoSHoL partners for their food insecure households as training and extension tool. |
This initiative is trying to address the following key issues: |
- Improvements to the quality (health, purity, viability and freedom from contaminants) and value of farmer-saved and farmer-traded seed (i.e. seed as a resource).
- Building farmer-centered seed systems, enabling the poor to access and benefit from seed from sources external to the community (i.e. seed as a commodity) and
- Taking forward learning from these into regional and national seed systems and policies.
|
The workshop used video shows, multimedia presentations, small group discussions, plenary sessions and field visit.
BTV and AIS showed interest in disseminating the messages of the project through BTV and monthly Krishikotha magazine.
With funding from CABI Bio-science UK , GSI started in January 2005 and will continue till December 2007.
FoSHoL-ActionAid has already committed to join and other FoSHoL project partners are expected to join the GSI South Asia network. National Coordinator, GSI South Asia will take initiatives soon.
