Disseminatioin BARI and BLRI Technologies through FoSHoL Partners

Dr. M. Zainul Abedin, Team Leader, FoSHoL-Coordination Project, visited Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) and Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute (BLRI) and had discussion meetings on Thursday 19, 2007 on BARI and BLRI technologies. The Director Generals and senior scientists of the respective organizations were present at the meetings. The main objective of the meeting was to seek support for FoSHoL Programme to disseminate technologies that are developed by BARI and BLRI.

In both meeting, Dr Abedin explained that the overall objective of the European Commission funded FoSHoL Programme is “Improved livelihood, specially the food security of small and marginal farm households by increased availability of, and access to, food as well as improve utilization by those households.” The programme is implemented by three international NGOs such as ActionAid, CARE and Practical Action, and coordinated by IRRI. The purpose of the FoSHoL-Coordination project implemented by IRRI is “FoSHoL-NGOs' projects are enhanced through strengthened coordination, synergies and technical assistance of an international agricultural research centre, and the FoSHoL Programme is monitored and evaluated. The ultimate beneficiaries of the FoSHoL programme targeted agricultural dependents resource poor households in 36 upazilas in 15 districts.

Dr. Abedin mentioned that FoSHoL Programme will assist the target groups with appropriate technologies from different sources as demanded by the target households. These will include production technologies related to crops, vegetables, livestock, poultry and fisheries.

The FoSHoL Programme will greatly benefit from support from BARI and BLRI through enhancing the knowledge of technologies developed by these institutes, training, development of communication materials, including fact sheets, to be uploaded in the FoSHoL website, providing literature support and seeds, etc.

A sample Training Manual (BRKB-based Aman Rice Production Training Module) was demonstrated at the meeting. This is available simultaneously in a folder as hard copy as well as in the FoSHoL website, an electronic depository of agriculture related knowledge accessible through web and CD-ROM, which is updated on a regular basis. Dr Abedin informed that FoSHoL-Coordination project may share resources for preparation of such fact sheets and training manuals, if necessary.

Both BARI and BLRI expressed their interest in strengthening collaboration with FoSHoL Programme through creating awareness among FoSHoL partners, organizing and providing resource persons in training courses, developing training manuals, communication materials including fact sheets in collaboration with IRRI and FoSHoL projects. In the meeting, BARI and BLRI briefly shared the information about technologies available with them. They have agreed to respond to the needs and requested FoSHoL-Coordination-IRRI to pursue the process so that a functional relationship is established between BARI/BLRI and FoSHoL Programme NGOs though IRRI facilitation. The institutes are willing to enter into formal agreement with IRRI.

During the visits, Dr. Abedin was accompanied by Mr. Md. Abdul Mannan, Information Technology Officer, IRRI Bangladesh Office.
