FoSHoL partners had a good orientation to Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) supported project Integrated Pest Management (IPM)-Collaborative Research Support Program (CRSP) technologies on May 15, 2006. IPM-CRSP project and FoSHoL-IRRI jointly organized the day long sensitizing workshop at HRC Conference Room at BARI, Gazipur. Dr. Shahadat Hossian, Director General, BARI was present in the workshop as the Chief Guest while Dr. M. Matiur Rahman, Director-Research, BARI chaired. Dr. M. Iqbal Akhter, Director-Horticulture Research Center (HRC), Dr. M. A. Hamid Miah, IRRI Liaison Scientist and FoSHoL-IRRI Project Manager & IRRI Representative Dr. Noel P. Magor chaired the technical sessions.

Dr. M. A. Rashid CSO-HRC, Dr. Shahabuddin Ahmad, SSO-HRC, Dr. M. A. Rahman, SSO-HRC, Dr. S. N. Alam, SSO-Entomology Division, Mr. Mozammel Haque, CSO-Planning Division and Dr. Azizur Rahman, CSO, Agronomy Division of BARI presented papers on different technologies developed under the project.
These technologies include Egg plant varieties resistant to pests, Egg plant grafting for bacterial wilt control, Tomato grafting for bacterial wilt control, Soil amendment for management of soil inhabiting disease pathogens, Bait trapping for fruit fly control in cucurbit crops, Biological control of eggplant and cabbage pests, IPM approach for controlling leaf eating pests of cabbage/cauliflower and Economic weed management in vegetable crops. Dr A. N. M. Rezaul Karim, Coordinator, IPM-CRSP Bangladesh site facilitated the workshop and also presented an overview of the technologies developed under the project.
FoSHoL team members participated in the workshop are Mr. Mofizur Rahman, Associate Coordinator of FoSHoL-ActionAid, Mr. A. N. M. Elias of FoSHoL-CARE Rajshahi, Mr. Md. Zakir Hossain, Senior Market Promotion Officer and Mr. Joynal Abedin, Community Organizer of FoSHoL-ITDG Jamalpur, Md. Waliul Reza, FoSHoL-ITDG Faridpur, FoSHoL-ITDG local NGO partner Mr. Fazlul Haque of GUP Faridpur and Mr. Ahmad Salahuddin of FoSHoL-IRRI.
The participants showed their interest to receive the technologies from BARI and requested IRRI to formalize relationship with BARI. They also requested IRRI to organize a ToT on BARI technologies particularly on IPM-CRSP technologies for the technical staff of FoSHoL. Dr. Rezaul Karim responded to the requests positively and promised to extend all possible support.
The following decisions were taken in the concluding session:
- The participants representing FoSHoL-CARE, FoSHoL-ActionAid and FoSHoL-ITDG will recommend to their respective management authorities to undertake plans for disseminating the BARI IPM-CRSP technologies through the FoSHoL project
- FoSHoL-IRRI will arrange a meeting on June 4, 2006 at IRRI office with the management authorities of the FoSHoL partners to discuss and prepare plans for implementation of the BARI IPM-CRSP technologies at the farm level as per demand of the households
- The FoSHoL-IRRI Project Manager Dr. Noel P. Magor and IPM-CRSP Site Coordinator will have formal discussion with BARI Director General about formalizing the collaboration of the FoSHoL partners through a collaboration agreement
- In order to transfer the BARI IPM-CRSP technologies appropriately and successfully, the BARI scientists will conduct three-day training for the field officers of FoSHoL partners at BARI in July 2006 and
The FoSHoL partners will prepare a work plan to carryout the technology transfer activities through their ongoing FoSHoL project activities in their target areas. |
