FoSHoL Extension Method Workshop held from April 17 – 18, 2006 at RDRS, Rangpur

FoSHoL-IRRI with its implementing partners ActionAid, CARE and ITDG Bangladesh along with their local NGO partners has organized a two-day workshop on Extension Method focussing on seed from April 17 – 18, 2006 at RDRS, Rangpur with the theme ‘ Extension Methods for Dissemination of Agricultural Technology for Impact on Food Insecure Households'.

The objective of the workshop was to learn from the experiences of PETRRA partners who had developed extension methods under PETRRA project that fitted to their respective organizations and eventually mainstreamed into their programs. The purpose of this workshop was to share these methods with the FoSHoL partners who are in the process of developing their own extension methods that would ultimately contribute to the proper dissemination of agriculture technology to the FoSHoL beneficiary HHs and are expected to sustain during and beyond the project.

The whole workshop was designed to first listen to the cases together with the experience of the farmer/ farmer leaders and then to try to develop extension methods as perceived by the partners in groups analyzing the respective context .

Among PETRRA-BRRI extension method sub-project partners, Dr. Musherraf Husain, Head & Chief Scientific Officer of Adaptive Research Division, Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) presented the ARD Model for Technology Identification & Validation; Dr. M. K. Bashar, Head & Chief Scientific Officer of Genetic Resources & Seed Division, BRRI presented the GRS National Seed Network model while Dr. M. A. Mazid, Principal Scientific Officer & Station Head of BRRI Regional Station, Rangpur presented Focal Area Network model. Mr. A. K. M. Zakaria, Deputy Director of the Rural Development Academy, Bogra presented the Learner-Centred Video productions as dissemination tools for PETRRA seed health sub-project. He also presented the video production concept of recently launched Good Seed Initiative (GSI) project.

Among PETRRA-NGO extension method sub-project partners Mr. M. G. Neogi, Agricultural Coordinator, RDRS presented the RDRS Federation Model for Seed Production & Marketing. Two farmer leaders from the federation supplemented his presentation. Mr. Harun-Ar-Rashid of Agricultural Advisory Society (AAS) presented the Farmseed model.

At the end the FoSHoL partners presented their possible extension method flow charts based on their respective contexts and what they have learnt from the PETRRA experience during the two days. The participants very much appreciated the RDRS Federation model of seed production, processing and marketing, AAS Farmseed model, the experience of the Focal Area Forum (FAF) in the Northwest and its sustainability even two years after completion of the project. They shown interest in linking their groups with the national seed network of BRRI, technology identification and validation process together with Adaptive Research Division of BRRI and with Good Seed Initiative (GIS) project to get access to videos for rice and non-rice seed technologies.

Magor, Project Manager, FoSHoL-IRRI; Mr. Mizanour Rahman Choudhury, Project Coordinator, FoSHoL-CARE; Mr. Mohammad Ali, Team Leader, FoSHoL-ITDG; Mr. Dipu Shamsul Islam, Team Manager, Speed Trust, a local partner NGO of FoSHoL-ActionAid and Ms. Bulbuli Rani, Vice President, RDRS Farmers Federation chaired the sessions. Mr. Ahmad Salahuddin, Manager-Coordination & Capacity Building of FoSHoL-IRRI facilitated the sessions. Mr. Mamunul Haque, Asst Manager-Communications assisted him.

Resource persons from BRRI, RDA, AAS, RDRS and representatives from the three implementing partners FoSHoL-ActionAid, FoSHoL-CARE, FoSHoL-ITDG and local NGO partners Speed Trust, JJS, Apex, LUSTRE, VARD, Unnayan Sangha, GUP and RDSM participated in this workshop.

It is expected that each implementing partner will use the experience to enrich their own extension process (methods and pathways) for them within the project period and also for farmers in accessing technology beyond the project period.
